Why Positive Thinking Works,
and How to Start Thinking Positively

Dear Friend,

Positive thinking is nothing new, and back in 1952 it was nothing new.

But when Dr. Norman Vincent Peale's book, The Power of Positive Thinking was published that year, the phrase and the concept captured the imagination of much of the western world.

Fifty years later, concepts shared in the The Power of Positive Thinking offer the same common-sense appeal.  Positive thinking works because people make it work... the self-discipline and determination, the persistence and the plain old hard work necessary to achieve success somehow fall into place when each is built on a foundation of positive thought.

Positive thinking is part belief, part faith, and part exercise...repetitive, constant, mental exercise.

The essence of the power of positive thinking may lie in this one simple line from Dr. Peale...

Change your thoughts and you change your world.

So what, exactly, do you change your thoughts from?  And what do you change them to?  What, exactly, are the specific ingredients of positive thinking?

Dr. Peale offers this straightforward plan...

1.  Start with the belief that your life can indeed be changed, and that you have the power to change it.

You can have peace of mind, improved health and an ever-increasing flow of energy. Life can be full of joy and satisfaction.

2.  Inject enthusiasm into everything you do.

Your enthusiasm will be infectious, stimulating and attractive to others.   They will love you for it.   They will go for you and with you.

3.   Make sure you pay attention to what's right with your life, not just what's wrong.

We've all heard that we have to learn from our mistakes, but I think it's more important to learn from successes. If you learn only from your mistakes, you are inclined to learn only errors.

4.  Start right away.

If you put off everything till you're sure of it, you'll never get anything done.

5.  The simple act of doing something gives you strength.

Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence.   Inaction is not only the result, but the cause, of fear.    Perhaps the action you take will be successful; perhaps different action or adjustments will have to follow.    But any action is better than no action at all.

6.  Visualize success.

Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding.   Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade.   Your mind will seek to develop the picture...   Do not build up obstacles in your imagination.

These six steps for successful positive thinking are not complicated, but they can be difficult.

And building the affirmations you need for positive thinking can be difficult.    These five steps can help you turn good intentions into exciting results.

Bad days, tough times, adversities, setbacks and struggles are all threatening our belief in a better tomorrow and a more rewarding life.

One way to stay on course is with some positive reinforcement... positive thoughts to keep you moving toward success, and to help you enjoy each day to its fullest.
